Artist: Markus Schinwald

Markus Schinwald borrows typical strategies of theatrical stage direction and employs them within the cinematographic. In doing so, the artist explores the notion of the “staged-matrix” by building a performative construction that juxtaposes symmetric rationality with emotion. In Diarios (2003), Schinwald superimposes images of nature onto portraits of architecture by transferring 160 black and white slide projections into a cinematic format. Built on a constant cycle of fade ins and fade outs, the film becomes an unsettling exercise in endless displacement. The soundtrack includes an exchange between a woman who reads what is understood as screenplay directions while a man recites an emotive text of poetry and love.
