Gillian Wearing investigates social behaviour in order to lay bare the darker sides of inconsistencies supporting the crux of human drives. Through seemingly banal documentation strategies, Wearing allows individuals to act and behave as themselves while masquerading as others. In Tedi, she focuses on an Albanian child who extols the virtues of the heroic monuments located in the capital of Tirana in patriotic and emphatic language. Shot in a home video format, the work capitalizes on the rhetoric-laden verse of a child who takes his job very seriously. We sense the tension in the child’s forceful attempt to correctly deliver his script that refers us back to a time when propaganda often went unquestioned.
