Whol Why Wurld

Artist: Jess Johnson
installation, video | 5 looped 4K video animations | 00:31 | 2017

Whol Why Wurld is a series of 5 animated videos shown atop a raised decagon platform. The digital animations were created by video artist Simon Ward, who translated the imagery from Jess Johnson's hand-made drawings. Each video is a richly detailed hypnotic scene that plays on an endless loop; functioning as a moving drawing. The collaboration between Jess Johnson and Simon Ward, and their audio designer Andrew Clarke, has been operating over the last several years and is an extension of Johnson's highly detailed drawing practice, which lies at the heart of the work's visual references. The collaborative practice produces a transition across the sensory realms. Whol Why Wurld offers the experience of a digitally formed world that is both fictional and of-our-world, and which presents known allusions to art and symbolism, including cosmic mythology, science fiction, the occult, early video games, RPG modules, and the architecture of the Middle Ages.
